AEK - Olympiacos

AEK - Olympiacos

Greece - Super League, Championship Round, Round 8

AEK, despite the setback of several players contracting the virus before the derby against Panathinaikos, dominated the game at Leoforos. They came close to securing a big victory that would have put them in the lead for the title, but they failed to score a goal and settled for a scoreless draw. Zuber hit the post twice, missed other good chances, and was only really threatened in the dying moments of the first half, with goalkeeper Athanasiadis saving Sporar's header. In the last three games, they now need at least one better result than Panathinaikos, as they are behind in the draw. However, there is optimism within the team that if they win all three games, they will be crowned Champions in the end. Olympiacos is their next opponent, against whom they have performed well in all matches (SL & Cup), even though the results are divided (2-1-2). On Sunday, they will play against Aris (away) and close with Volos (at home).

In team news, Rota was forced to make a change in Leoforo and Pineda was recruited at the right end of the defense due to discomfort. The Greek full-back was dispatched, but the Mexican all-rounder is most likely to be retained. Midfielders Simanski and Jonsson also faced problems, but both are okay and one of the two will partner with Mandalo in the midfield. Amrabat is also vying for a position instead of Eliasson. The only absentees are the leader Araujo and the unprepared Sidibe.

AEK has a double mission to accomplish: to get three points to stay at least level with Panathinaikos and to transfer pressure to Olympiakos for the third place, in view of the "eternal" derby that follows. Therefore, home till will give it all to win this game.
