Freiburg – Werder
Bundesliga Round 2
Freiburg, August 26, 15:30 CET
Werder's form is disastrous, the club from Bremen has five losses with a draw in the last six matches in the Bundesliga and in all competitions, and the picture of the form and quality of the team at the start of the new season does not offer any reasons for optimism.
In the opening round, Werder lost 4:0 to champions Bayern Munich at home. On the visit to Freiburg, the team's defense will again be seriously tested.
Freiburg, on the other hand, is a club that in the years behind us demonstrated a clear trajectory of gradual progress. In the last two seasons, this team finished fifth and sixth in the Bundesliga, and it was in matches like this, against objectively worse teams on their home field, that Freiburg showed confidence. In the first round, they beat Hoffenheim 2:1 away, which is a great prelude to the first match at their stadium of the season.
Home team is expected to play attacking from the start against Werder. Against Hoffenheim, Freiburg had as many as 18 shots - and the opponent had 22 shots. As a rule, in the matches of this team, both teams manage to create a large number of chances - but Freiburg is the one that most often shows that they are more precise and with more focus in front of the opponent's goal.
Werder completely disappointed against Bayern in the first round of the Bundesliga. The team had only 27 percent of ball possession in the match they played at their stadium. Goalkeeper Sven Ulreich had only one save in the match. Since the beginning of February, this team has had huge problems, in 16 matches in the Bundesliga they've won only two games. It is clear that Werder expects a tough fight for survival in the coming period. The problem for the team is the injury of the main star, former Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita, who will not play in this match and is still waiting for his debut in the official match for Bremen there.
On August 12, Werder shockingly lost to the third-tier team Viktoria Koln 2:0 in the national cup (DFP Pokal)... It is clear that, overall, the atmosphere and morale of the team are damaged before a difficult visit, and that it's hard to expect that Werder can play an impressive defense against Freiburg.
Freiburg will probably play with the same lineup that won against Hoffenheim last week. The fact that Adamu and Kyereh are sidelined for this match due to knee injuries should not worry the hosts too much - as their absence was not felt in the first round.
Freiburg came close to qualifying for the Champions League, but fell short in a string of matches during the spring. The team now works with better quality, preserved and strengthened during the summer. With a certainty of at least two goals in the visitors' net, Freiburg will have an excellent opportunity to show that they don't allow any stumbling on their field.
The home side have won three in a row in all competitions, scoring six goals and keeping two clean sheets - and this match is a great opportunity to continue that streak.
