Master 1000 Madrid - Day 2
Albot R. Monteiro T.
Albot pulled off a surprising win in the first round against the experienced Pedro Martinez, showing his comfort on these courts. His kick serve made the difference against Martinez, but Monteiro responds aggressively, often attacking the Moldovan's softer shots. It could be a hard-fought match that might be decided in the third set.
Nakashima B. Carabelli C.
Nakashima continues to showcase his aptitude on clay, although he faced some challenges in the second set against the Moroccan Bannini, conceding many errors. However, when he played his game, he left little chance for his opponent. His performance may be affected by fatigue accumulated in Barcelona, but he starts as the favorite. Carabelli also feels comfortable on these courts, as demonstrated in his first-round win against a fatigued Zapata Miralles. This match could be decided in the rallies, where Nakashima is expected to be aggressive.
Tirante T.A. Klein L.
Despite winning 2-0, Tirante showed occasional lapses and lack of composure, likely due to the many matches played recently and the slightly faster surface than what he's accustomed to. This might tilt the balance in favor of Klein, who managed to overcome some self-induced troubles with his powerful serve and forehand. I believe Klein will win, though perhaps not without difficulty, depending largely on the approach to the match and especially the early service games of the Argentine.
Bagnis F. Zappieri G.
Bagnis won a hard-fought match against Goffin, capitalizing on his opponent's errors and displaying solidity on serve. However, unlike Goffin, Zappieri is a much more aggressive player who likes to dictate play and could benefit from the Argentine's errors forced by the Italian's aggression. After returning from injury, Zappieri seemed in excellent form against a formidable opponent like Marterer, and his strong service percentages helped him secure an uncertain victory. I favor the Italian, especially due to his better physical condition.
Bautista R. Ramos A.
A match between two players who have made their mark on these courts. Bautista dominated his match today, showing excellent form, unlike Ramos, who won by capitalizing on Schwartzman's errors, especially when the latter served to close the match. Bautista, with his aggression and powerful shots, is the clear favorite, especially considering Ramos might struggle with his pace and power. Additionally, Bautista seems to have the edge in terms of physical freshness.
Kokkinakis T. Thiem D.
As expected, Kokkinakis avenged his previous loss to Barrere, proving that his powerful game is very effective on faster courts. Thiem, on the other hand, made his life difficult by struggling to win against Meligeni Alves, not exactly a top-ranked opponent. Kokkinakis might exploit Thiem's slow and short game to attack and put pressure on him, while Thiem will try to disrupt the Australian's rhythm. However, Thiem is no longer the player he once was.
