Monaco – Anadolu Efes

Monaco – Anadolu Efes

International - Euroleague, Round 8

14/11/2023 - 19:00 CET

After two unexpected losses to Valencia and Virtus in the first two rounds, Monaco has found its rhythm in the EuroLeague with five consecutive wins. Mike James has been a true leader, deciding games with his three-point shots against Milano and Asvel. The return of Jordan Loyd, who was absent for a few months, and the gradual integration of Kemba Walker have strengthened the team. However, head coach Sasa Obradovic is still figuring out the roles for newcomers such as Petr Cornelie, Mam Jaiteh and Terry Tarpey. With a roster of 15 quality players, it's challenging to utilize everyone in every game.

On the other hand, Anadolu Efes has struggled early in the season. Will Clyburn had a terrible performances until the recent game against Zalgiris, where he showcased his offensive repertoire. Clyburn and Shane Larkin stand out as the players capable of delivering in crucial moments, while the rest of the roster may not meet the expected level of play. Tyrique Jones has not lived up to expectations yet, and Ante Zizic has a lot of ups and downs. The team's short rotation, often relying on only eight or nine players, becomes a key issue, especially when a few players have off-nights.

Monaco currently ranks among the top teams in the EuroLeague alongside Real Madrid and Barcelona in all aspects. Despite Larkin and Clyburn forming a great tandem, Monaco boasts more superstars. Mike James is in exceptional form, displaying mature and responsible basketball maybe for the first time in his career. John Brown and Alpha Diallo will aim to slow down Clyburn, while Monaco's advantage under the rim with Motiejunas and Hall is significant. Anadolu Efes faces big challenge on Tuesday, and they would need an exceptional performance to hope for an upset. If they fall below their potential, a scenario similar to the one in Piraeus a few weeks ago is more than realistic.
