Reds - Giants
Even on a routine ground ball, Elly De La Cruz can showcase something unique and magical. In Sunday's loss against the Brewers, the Reds' rookie third baseman recorded Statcast's fastest-tracked infield assist at 97.9 mph.
Despite De La Cruz's recent struggles against the Milwaukee Brewers, going 1-for-16 with 6 strikeouts over his last four games, including an 0-for-12 performance in the three-game series sweep, his season has already been marked by spectacular moments in his young Major League career, just 33 games in.
In only his second Major League game on June 7, De La Cruz launched his first home run against the Dodgers. The ball traveled an estimated 458 feet, nearly clearing Great American Ball Park. With an exit velocity of 114.8 mph, it became the second-hardest-hit ball for a player's first home run in the Statcast era.
In his 15th game on June 23 against the Braves, the 21-year-old accomplished an impressive feat by hitting for the cycle, becoming the first Reds player to do so since Davis in 1989.
On July 8 against Milwaukee, De La Cruz achieved his most dazzling feat yet by stealing second base, third base, and home in the same inning. The Brewers may have contained him during the weekend series, but now the Giants await, coming off a three-game sweep at PNC Park and riding a five-game winning streak.
With the first leg of their longest road trip of the season behind them, the Giants are heading to Cincinnati to kick off a four-game series at Great American Ball Park on Monday night. Logan Webb, who ended the first half with a Major League-high 126 innings pitched, will start the series opener.
Expect fireworks from both teams in this series, as the Giants aim to extend their winning streak while De La Cruz and the Reds look to steal the spotlight.
