Silkeborg – Viborg
Danish Superliga Round 9
Silkeborg, September 24, 14:00 CET
Silkeborg has a great opportunity to win the fifth consecutive game in the new season of the Danish Superliga, in the duel against Viborg on Sunday.
Last season, they finished only ninth out of 12 clubs in the elite division of the Danish championship. In the last two months, Silkeborg has been the absolute most pleasant surprise of football in Denmark, and a high ranking in the table was guaranteed by big victories over champions FC Copenhagen 3:1 away (August 26) and vice-champion Nordsjaelland 2:0 (August 20).
Those triumphs have given the Silkeborg team great confidence - which was evident in the 3-0 win away to Odense last weekend. Now the team, at least on paper, has an easier job at their stadium, against Viborg.
Overall, Viborg has not impressed since the beginning of the season. The team already has three defeats in the domestic championship, and their performances in two triumphs (the last one over outsiders Vejle 2:1, in the match played in Viborg on August 21) were not impressive.
Viborg has not won in the last three matches, last weekend at home this team drew against Midtjylland 2:2 – and again the game was not at a satisfactory level of play. This squad has not scored a goal in the last three away games (they have been defeated in two) and will have little chance to attack Silkeborg with a success.
Last season, interestingly, it was a completely different story: Viborg won 2:1 in Sileborg at the end of October last year. This summer, the teams played a friendly match – in a duel in which most first team players didn't play for both clubs, Viborg won 4:2 in mid-July.
Silkeborg last won against this rival 4:1, at the beginning of August 2021. Now they are in an ideal position to return to winning ways in H2H duels with Viborg.
The home team will certainly not count only on striker Adamson for this match - and he is not an important player in the Silkeborg rotation. On the other hand, Viborg will be without Icelandic defender Agnarsson, while the question is whether defender Lauritsen will be ready.
The club from Silkeborg is facing an important test, now for the first time they are facing the pressure of the favorites role - and a victory for the home team would mean a further fight for the top of the table. From everything shown so far, they have the quality to fight for a place in next season's European competitions.
The Silkeborg team had a whole week to prepare for this duel, in the worst case they will be in a position to "break" the rival in the last 20 or 30 minutes, in the fight for victory. The physically and tactically much better prepared squad has an excellent opportunity for triumph, before a series of more challenging duels in the Superliga.
