Tigers - Angels
USA - MLB, Round 1
With more than two months left in the season, the Angels are well aware that the upcoming week holds significant importance for multiple reasons. Now is the critical time for them to make a strong push towards achieving their goals. To reach the desired destination, the Halos must seize every opportunity to succeed.
In yesterday's game, Mickey Moniak showcased a mixed performance. He soared high, extending his career-high hit streak and making a pair of dazzling catches in center field. However, he also committed a crucial miscue in the bottom of the ninth, which resulted in the game going to extra innings. Fortunately, he rebounded from the mistake and drove in the game-winning run with a double in the top of the 10th, leading Los Angeles to a 7-6 victory in the series opener at Comerica Park.
During the team's extra-inning comeback, Moniak played a vital role as the catalyst. His redemption came in the form of a double up the first-base line, eluding a diving Torkekson, and bringing home the go-ahead run, Mike Moustakas, who started as the automatic runner.
Earlier in the game, Moniak's single in the top of the fourth extended his hit streak to 15 games, making it the longest active hit streak in MLB. This also tied him with two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani for the longest hit streak by an Angel this season.
Moniak's defensive prowess also proved crucial as he prevented Detroit from causing significant damage, with an impressive catch on a hard-hit liner by Kerry Carpenter in the fourth inning, which took him crashing into the padded wall in center field.
Though Moniak's ninth-inning mistake stung momentarily, he wasted no time in regaining his composure and setting things right by stepping up to the plate with a bat in hand.
Aaron Loup provided strong support, securing his first save of the season. He bounced back impressively from an ERA north of 7.00 and a stint on the IL in May, to register a 2.16 ERA in June and deliver a scoreless performance in seven of his eight appearances in July.
The Angels now have a chance to make significant strides both in Detroit and during the next leg of their three-city road trip when they head to Toronto for three games. Let's see if the Angels can capitalize on this opportunity and find a way to secure victories.
