Viborg has an ideal opportunity to achieve the second triumph in the new season of the Danish Superliga, when they welcome Vejle on Monday, a team that is without points and in last place of the table.
Last week Viborg drew in a goalless match against Hvidovre. In that match, this team shot at Hvidovre's goal 28 times - but the goal did not happen. Now, against Vejle, a team that has huge problems in defense, the hosts will have an excellent opportunity to score at least more than one goal.
For the Viborg team, this match brings a clear imperative to triumph. In the previous Superliga season, they finished third. Now, after the unexpected setback Nordsjaelland suffered, and the vice-champion's defeat on Sunday away to Silkeborg (2:0), Viborg has a great opportunity to get somewhat closer to the second position.
Interestingly, these teams played two games during 2022 - both ended 2:2. Vejle played the previous season in a lower level of the competition (Division 1), in which they finished first... However, this team has not yet shown that they are worthy of competing in the elite Superliga, far from it. Eight goals were conceded in four games. On the other hand, Viborg has scored only five goals so far - and they will perform in front of their fans with the obligation to improve the impression from the previous games.
Although the Vejle team played well against the champions FC Copenhagen in a 3:2 defeat, in all four defeats this season this team failed to achieve a double-digit number of shots in the match. Precisely because of the inefficiency that the Vejla team has demonstrated so far in the Superliga, it is more realistic to expect at least two goals from the home team - than at least three goals in total in the game.
Viborg coach Jacob Friis publicly pointed out that key players can do better, and Portuguese forward Serginho and Danish forward Ementa are expected to score goals in this game. The home team will not count on midfielder Jakob Vester (broken foot), and the question is whether defender Mads Lauritsen will be able to perform. Viborg will certainly perform in an attacking 4-3-3 formation and look for a goal already in the opening phase of the game.
On the other hand, Vejle is counting on all healthy players and will try to show, in the more defensive 3-4-3 formation of coach Ivan Prelec, that they have the quality, strength and maturity for a place in the elite.
In the 2021-22 season, the teams played four matches and a draw was seen three times... However, now Viborg is a distinct favorite, in a match in which an efficient edition of the host is expected. Interestingly, in their last five matches, only once both teams didn't manage to score a goal.
